Elevated food inflation is burning a big hole in the pockets of consumers. While the cost of a household thali meal declined marginally on a month-on-month basis in August due to a high base, it remained high on a year-on-year basis for the second time this fiscal, primarily because of firm tomato prices.
The cost of a vegetarian thali rose 24 per cent and a non-vegetarian thali 13 per cent in August when compared to the same period of last year, says a report from rating firm Crisil.
