Sensex slumps 610 pts, Nifty falls to 19,523; IT, FMCG stocks drag, all sectors bleed

After opening slightly higher, domestic equities plunged on Thursday led by losses in IT and FMCG stocks and on F&O expiry day. BSE benchmark Sensex plunged 610 points, or 0.92 per cent to 65,508.32, while broader NSE Nifty50 slumped 192.90 points, or 0.98 per cent to 19,523.55.
Broader markets also extended the losses as Nifty Midcap 50 slumped 1.73 per cent, Nifty Midcap Select fell 1.90 per cent, Nifty Next 50 slumped 1.49 per cent, and Nifty Midcap 100 slipped 1.32 per cent. On the other hand, India Vix spurt over 10 per cent today.
All sectors closed on a negative note, as Nifty IT slipped 2.19 per cent, followed by Nifty FMCG at 1.91 per cent, Nifty Media at 1.40 per cent, Nifty PSU Bank at 1.13 per cent, and the consumer durables index at 1.12 per cent.

Tech Mahindra closed over 4 per cent lower today, followed by Asian Paints at around 4 per cent after media reports stated that the company’s co-founder Ashwin Dani died aged 79.
Other stocks that dragged benchmark indices today were LTI Mindtree, M&M, Wipro, Divis Lab, HDFC Life, Britannia, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ITC, Bajaj Finserv and Infosys.
L&T, Bharti Airtel, ONGC, Coal India, PowerGrid, Axis Bank, NTPC, and SBI were net gainers in today’s session in the Nifty50 index.
